Fifteenth issue of ethnic minorities' festival inaugurated in Moldova

Chisinau, 18 September /MOLDPRES/ - The 15th issue of the republican festival of ethnic minorities, titled, Unity through Diversity, was inaugurated in the Stefan cel Mare public garden of Chisinau on 18 September.  

On 18 September morning, representatives of central and local bodies, European Union Delegation to Moldova, the diplomatic corps accredited to Chisinau, as well as of ethnic and cultural organisations laid flowers at the monument to Stefan cel Mare, after which they participated in the official opening of the festival.

In his speech, the director-general of the Inter-ethnical Relations Bureau (BRI), Oleg Babenco, has said that the slogan of this event, which had turned emblematic for Moldova – Unity through Diversity, was characteristic for the country, and at the same time, was one of the basic principles of the European Union.

‘’Being the vastest event dedicated to the cultural diversity, carried out by BRI in concert with the Chisinau city hall, the festival will contribute  to strengthening the Moldovan society, in the context of Moldova’s  European integration,’’ Babenco noted.

Head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola stressed that EU was permanently approaching problems of ethnic minorities. ‘’I was happy to receive the invitation to participate in this festival, where we have a tent and an exhibition dedicated to the today’s event,’’ Tapiola said.

Contacted by MOLDPRES, the head of the BRI inter-ethnical relations and languages functioning department, Ludmila Burlaca, said the festival’s goal was to turn to account and perpetuate the traditions of ethnic minorities, as well as to develop the inter-cultural dialogue, strengthen the friendship relations between representatives of different ethnic groups living in Moldova.

Forty five ethnic and cultural organisations and 32 artistic bands from 11 districts take part in the 2016 year issue of the festival.

The festival will be held in more districts till 25 September.
