Chisinau, 3 January  /MOLDPRES/ – President of Moldova, Igor Dodon, signed the decree to withdraw Moldovan citizenship from former President of Romania, Traian Basescu.

According to the document, the citizenship of the wife of the former President of Romania, Maria Basescu, has not been withdrawn.

Head of state Igor Dodon wrote on a social network that there was held today the meeting of the Commission on Citizenship and Political Asylum under the President of Moldova, where there were examined in detail the conditions of eligibility for citizenship of Traian Basescu.

"Previously, as a Member of Parliament, I said that the citizenship to Mr. Basescu was awarded illegally. He repeatedly urged to liquidate the Moldovan statehood by annexing to Romania. During his exercise of function of the President of Romania, he refused to recognize the existence of the Moldovan people and the Moldovan statehood. All of the above come into serious contradiction with the provisions of the supreme law – the Constitution of Moldova. Moreover, during the procedure for granting Moldovan citizenship, there were ignored numerous opinions from several institutions, including the fact of prosecution existence. So, by means of withdrawal of Moldovan citizenship to Mr. Traian Basescu, I shall correct the violations committed by the former president," wrote Igor Dodon on a social network.

The application for Moldovan citizenship was filed by the former President of Romania, Traian Basescu, and his wife, on 10 March 2016. Subsequently, in June last year by a decree of former President Nicolae Timofti, Traian Basescu and his wife received Moldovan citizenship.
