Moldovan top court says lawfulness of withdrawal of Moldova's citizenship from former Romanian president within competence of law courts

Chisinau, 10 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Constitutional Court (CCM) today turned down the consideration of a notification submitted by a lawmaker of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), Grigore Cobzac, on the lawfulness of a decision by President Igor Dodon to withdraw Moldova’s citizenship from the former president of Romania, Traian Basescu.

According to the CCM press service, the notification was returned to the PLDM MP, as it had been submitted with the infringement of the competence clearly established by the Law on Moldova’s citizenship.

CCM specified that the law sees that “The Decree by the President of Moldova on the issue of citizenship can be attacked at the Supreme Court of Justice in a six-month term after the date of entrance into force.” Thus, the lawfulness of the withdrawal of the Moldovan citizenship from Traian Basescu is within the exclusive competence of law courts.

In early January, President Igor Dodon signed a decree, thereby withdrawing Moldova’s citizens from the ex-president of Romania, Traian Basescu. Three days later, MP Grigore Cobzac submitted a notification to CCM, thereby demanding the recognizing of the decree as unconstitutional.
