Chisinau, 9 March /MOLDPRES/- The European Union will provide Moldova with 1.1 million euros as assistance for strengthening the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (AMDM) of Moldova.

AMDM director Vladislav Zara today said that a team made up of 47 experts from Lithuania and Poland would provide assistance to the agency for developing practical skills in the regulation and supervision of pharmaceutical market and medical devices in accordance with EU requirements. “Thanks to the implementation of this project, AMDM will consolidate activity in clinical studies, vigilance, registration of drugs and medical devices, distribution, as well as in authorization of pharmaceutical activity. At the same time, the project sees strengthening and adjusting the regulatory framework in medicines and medical devices, as well as the agency’s preparation for joining the Community of regulatory agencies as equal partner”, Zara said.

Deputy Health Minister Liliana Iasan said that the Twinning project would allow AMDM to improve the role of protecting public health by ensuring observance of European standards in marketing the medicines. “While implementing this project, we will take into account the quality, safety and transparency in regulating the production, distribution and use of drugs. Thus, AMDM will benefit from expertise and experience of neighboring countries in order to solve at least some of the problems existing in the health system”, Iasan said.

For his part, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola said that respecting the right to be healthy was one of the fundamental values of the EU. “Moldova cooperates with the EU and benefits from programmes in health insurance. So, we have experience in this regard, and the project launched today could help Moldova have a new management in the medical system”, Tapiola said.

The Twinning project is to be implemented during two years.
