World Bank to support Moldova in strengthening energy security

Chisinau, 15 March /MOLDPRES/- The World Bank has reiterated willingness to support Moldova in strengthening energy security of the country and improving the regulatory framework of entrepreneurial activity. WB Director for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine Satu Kahkonen made the statement at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister, Economics Minister Octavian Calmic.

According to the press service of the Economics Ministry, the officials expressed interest in successfully implementing the project on modernizing Termoelectrica company and interconnecting energy systems of Moldova and Romania. In the context, the two officials agreed to modernize the heating system in Chisinau and reconnect public buildings to it, which will allow optimizing the activity of Termoelectrica company.

The officials also approached the issue related to importance of implementing the project on improving efficiency of system of centralized heat. In this respect, representatives of the World Bank said they would support the regulatory institutions in Moldova in elaborating a new methodology for determining and approving tariffs for thermal energy delivered to consumers in accordance with the best European practices.

Also, the WB reiterated willingness to be part along with other development partners and international financial institutions to cover financial costs for construction of electrical interconnection and back-to-back station with Romania on the route Isaccea-Vulcanesti-Chisinau.
