Ungheni-Chisinau pipeline's construction works declared public utilities of national interest

Chisinau, 05 April /MOLDPRES/ – The Government today approved a bill on the declaration the construction of gas transmission pipeline Ungheni-Chisinau as public utility of national interest today. The document provides the expropriation of private land and administrative-territorial units that will cross the pipeline and compensations to land owners.  

The pipeline will stretch about 120 km and Chisinau will receive gas from Romania will pass through several locations, including Radenii Vechi, Todiresti, Pirlita (Ungheni district), Tuzara, Pitusca, Niscani, Temeleuti, Peticeni, Valcinet, Sadova, Calarasi. Also, the pipe will pass through the suburbs Tohatin, Stauceni, Gratiesti and Ghidighici (Chisinau municipality).

The acquisition cost of land for the pipeline and the cost of compensation to landowners affected by the construction works are estimated at 600 thousand euros, according to the feasibility study of the Ministry of Economy, which, on behalf of the state, will start the acquisition procedure. The Ministry adds that donor financial organizations "will oversee the expropriation procedure" to measure and monitor human rights are respected in these cases.

The Economy Ministry notes that the interconnection of national gas transport through a gas line and its extension to Chisinau, is "a strategic goal" which will contribute to energy security strengthening. Moldova through this pipeline will be connected with gas transportation system from the South – East of the EU.  

The construction of the gas pipe in the Moldovan direction of transport of Ungheni – Chisinau, which is the phase II of the project "Pipe interconnecting the gas transmission system in Romania with the gas transmission system in the Republic of Moldova", will start soon. Prime Minister Pavel Filip said in a TV show broadcast that the pipeline commissioning term being 2019 and the work to be completed by the end of 2018. The European Union has increased the grant for the pipeline from 10 million to 40 million euros, added the prime minister.

For the purpose of design and construction of the pipeline, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and European Investment Bank provided Moldova with loans up to 41 million euros.
