Chisinau, 25 April /MOLDPRES/ - Farmers and specialists in the sector from different Moldova’s regions on 25-28 April are trained in the implementation of GlobalGAP requirements, needed for farmers who are set to carry out exports. The training is organized by the USAID High Value Agriculture Activity Project (HVAA project), in order to explain fruits and vegetables producers the international standards applied in the production process.

The project’s specialist in communication, Inga Burlacu, noted that the application of the GlobalGAP standard was necessary for the farmers who intends to export agricultural producers to European Union, other states, as well as for the farmers who demand subsidies. The application of the concerned standard is imposed also by the ever greater demand of the consumers of safe and long-lasting food products.

The GlobalGAP certification shows the safety and sustainability of the process of production of fruits and vegetables, the HVAA project manager, Cynthia Steen said. She also said that the HVAA project would back farmers willing to implement this standard and certify the process of production of fruits and vegetables.

GlobalGAP is an international standard worked out in Europe for agricultural producers, accepted and recognized by traders of agricultural producers, which is used in more than 80 countries. The standard’s requirements cover the entire process of production, beginning with the selection of the land and ending with the supply of fruits and vegetables. In general, the GlobalGAP standards comprise the production of vegetables and fruits, cultivation of cereals and flowers, breeding of animals and fowl, aquaculture.

Moldova’s legislation comprises more than 75 per cent of GlobalGAP’s requirements. Given that these are compulsory requirements, they should be implemented by producers.
