Chisinau, 5 May /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament today ruled to merge the two drafts on the amendment of the electoral system, put by the Democratic Party (PDM) and Party of Socialists (PSRM), for the final reading.

At a request by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, the juridical commission for rules and immunities held a meeting and considered both drafts focused on the same subject.

Following the discussions, the commission members made a proposal to merge the two documents and take the mixed electoral system as conceptual basis for the second reading. The commission’s proposal was backed by 74 MPs.

“We deem as opportune the merger of the two drafts for the final reading, and in a five-day period, we will unveil to the lawmakers a consolidated text, which will have at its basis the mixed electoral system. The final draft will be submitted to the Venice Commission for consideration,” the head of the juridical commission for rules and immunities, Raisa Apolschi, said.

Under the draft, 51 MPs will be elected based on lists compiled by parties and 51 will get mandates after being elected in uninominal districts. Also, the document sees opening of electoral districts on the left bank of Dniester.

During the consideration of the two drafts on the change of the voting system, more citizens and representatives of opposition parties came outside the parliament to protest.
