Nine persons detained in files on corruption, influence peddling, abuse of office in Moldova

Chisinau, 25 May /MOLDPRES/ - The secretary of the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC), two CMC councilors and six representatives of economic agents today were detained by the National Anticorruption Centre (CNA) and prosecutors within more files on passive corruption, influence peddling and abuse of office.  

According to the CNA press service, the cases have been documented during several months; on this period, video and audio evidence was collected on committing more abuses, among which giving and taking bribes, influencing CMC decisions and favouring economic agents.   

The CNA press service also said that the CMC secretary was suspected of having repeatedly claimed money or assets from representatives of enterprises and some municipal councilors for various services, such as the inclusion on the CMC’s agenda of drafts on the change of borders of plots of land, for the preparation of a set of documents for the sale-purchasing of plots of land, for approving city development plans for certain units. Also, the CMS secretary would have claimed different sums of money for influencing the Council members or other decision-makers of the city hall.     

The CNA officers and prosecutors today made searches at the suspects’ offices, homes and cars. Nine persons were detained as a result of criminal prosecution actions for 72 hours, and afterwards, prosecutors will rule on demanding the preventive arrest.   

Criminal prosecution actions continue at present too with searches and hearing of  persons.

At the same time, searches currently take place also in the office of the Chisinau  general mayor, Dorin Chirtoaca.
