New Moldova-Council of Europe cooperation plan launched in Chisinau

Chisinau, 30 May /MOLDPRES/ - A new action plan Moldova – Council of Europe 2017-2020 was launched in Chisinau today.   

The document was officially presented by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and European Integration Minister Andrei Galbur in the presence of Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland.

According to the officials, the plan is a continuation of the documents implemented in the last years and is aimed at backing the carrying out the reforms in Moldova in more sectors, such as fighting corruption, judicial system and strengthening measures of trust between the two banks of Dniester.

“The new plan was worked out in an inclusive way, through the light of the objectives and observance of the commitments taken, as well as based on the conclusions reflected in the Moldova – EU Association Agreement, and the goals of consolidating the reforms and development of the authorities’ capacities were at the basis of the document. The act is an instrument of strategic planning in the implementation of our country’s commitments,” Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Galbur said.    

He thanked the Council of Europe for the support and assistance in carrying out the reforms in Moldova. “Only by joint effort, we will manage to remove the debts and implement the objectives set,” the Moldovan diplomacy head said.  

Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland said that the new plan would be focused on the same fields, with the main goal being fighting corruption and money laundering. “The old document yielded a string of results, among which also the prosecution reform; yet, there is still room for much work and the mass media plays an important role, which should be equidistant. The Council of Europe continues to remain committed to provide support to Moldova’s authorities, in order to strengthen a solid and consolidated rule of law state,” the European official said.     

Thorbjorn Jagland is on a two-day visit to Chisinau, where he is to meet President Igor Dodon, Prime Minister Pavel Filip and Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu.
