Contacted by MOLDPRES, a black-and-white artist, university professor Alexei Colibneac said that the exhibition comprised about 150 works made by professional fine artists and was homage paid to the founder of the modern Romanian painting, Nicolae Grigorescu.

“Most works represent landscapes of Moldova’s land: peasants’ houses, valleys and hills, the Dniester river, etc. Also here, there are paintings inspired from motifs of Nicolae Grigorescu’s paintings, whose works represents a perennial spring of inspiration. This exhibition is also of social importance, as the gallery is a commercial structure, set up in order to help fine artists survive,” Alexei Colibneac said.

Nicolae Grigorescu was born in the Pitaru village, Dimbovita county, Romania, on 15 may 1838. At the age of ten, Grigorescu started working as apprentice of icons painter at the workshop of Anton Chladek. Starting from 1879 till 1890, Nicolae Grigorescu worked especially in France. Back to Romania, he opened more personal exhibitions at the Romanian Athenaeum during 1891-1904. Beginning with 1890, he settled in Campina and devoted himself preponderantly to rustic subjects. In 1899, Grigorescu became honorary member of the Romanian Academy.
