Chisinau, 19 June /MOLDPRES/- UK Ambassador to Moldova Lucy Joyce today was convened at the Foreign and European Integration Ministry (MAEIE) to further clarify on the recent visit of Transnistrian leaders to Great Britain.

According to the MAEIE’s information and media relations service, the British official confirmed that the visit was private and its organizer was “Oxford Union”, a student association specialized in organizing debates on various topics of academic interest.

At the same time, Joyce noted that the representatives of the UK Foreign Ministry took this opportunity to communicate directly to the Tiraspol leaders the official position of the British government that the Transnistrian conflict should be solved in accordance with the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova and granting a special status to Transnistria. In this context, the British authorities reiterated willingness to further back the efforts in this respect with the involvement of international actors, in particular, by promoting various projects meant to contribute to strengthen confidence and rapprochement between the two banks of the Dniestre.

Deputy Foreign Minister Lilian Darii urged the British Embassy to focus on the inappropriateness of such actions in the future, invoking the negative political effects generated by the political stereotypes and malevolence of the exponents of the Tiraspol regime.

He also pointed out that the political abuses and slippages committed often by Tiraspol leaders who tend to use any platform to spread separatist ideas and to mislead public opinion, undermine the efforts taken with the support of international partners in order to find a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the Transnistrian conflict, respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova.
