Chisinau, 21 June /MOLDPRES/ – The recommendations of the Venice Commission are thoroughly scrutinized in Chisinau and soon there will be wide-ranging discussions with political parties and civil society to discuss the European experts’ opinion. Prime Minister Pavel Filip made the statement in Brussels at a joint conference with the European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn, today.

According to Filip, most of the Venice Commission’s recommendations will be taken into account in order to comply with all democratic norms and to avoid any kind of abuse in the elections. “We assured the European partners that the Commission’s recommendations were being studied and taken into account for the electoral system’s change, we continue the internal debates on this project. We want to find solutions and be consistent with the Venice Commission’s opinion,” said Filip.

The Premier asked that not to make direct link between the granting of macro-financial assistance and the modification of the electoral system, as the Government and the European Commission fulfilled all the preconditions of the common agreed. Pavel Filip said that this assistance was very important for Moldova, being strictly dedicated to the reforms’ implementation.

The European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, said that Moldova has made progress in several areas over 2017 and if maintaining the pace, Moldova would move closer to the EU. He said that the Moldovan authorities had to respect the Venice Commission’s opinion on the change of the voting system, and any electoral reform needed to be adapted to the political context in Moldova.
