Chisinau, 29 June /MOLDPRES/ – The report on monitoring the security of electricity and natural gas supply will be published tomorrow in the Official Journal of the Republic of Moldova.

According to the report, referring to the energy balance of 2015, the primary energy supply of Moldova, the predominant energy resources (35 per cent and 34.7 per cent respectively) are petroleum products and natural gas. Natural gas is one hundred per cent imported from Russia, and petroleum products from Romania, Bulgaria, Russia and other countries. Biofuels and waste represent 13.6 per cent, and coal and electricity 4.3 per cent and 12.3 per cent, respectively.

In the report, experts determined that the energy dependence of Moldova was about 88 per cent. The document notes that "high import dependency on imported gas and electricity, historical debts, outdated electricity and heat generation systems, inefficient district heating systems coupled with tariffs well below economic levels in the past contributed to the poor sector performance".

The report shows that only 12 per cent of energy demand is satisfied from indigenous energy resources. Such a "major dependence on energy makes the country's economy very vulnerable to any external disturbance in energy supply, fluctuations in energy prices, with a high degree of unpredictability in the future," said the report.

The document also refers to the fact that in December 2016 the second National Energy Efficiency Action Plan was approved. The Energy Efficiency Fund was set up in June 2012 to promote, develop and financially support investment projects in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. The report describes the situation in the gas and electricity sector, operators operating on the market, legislative and regulatory basis, existing capacities, and new energy transport projects, including interconnections.
