Judges admit organization of referendum for dismissing Chisinau general mayor

Chisinau, 22 July /MOLDPRES/ - The Buiucani district law court of Chisinau on 21 July admitted the organization of a referendum on the dismissal of Chisinau general mayor Dorin Chirtoaca.

Representative of the initiative group collected over 77,000 signatures, of which the court declared valid more than 75,000 ones. After the ruling had been pronounced, the Chisinau Municipal Council is to establish the date for the organization of the referendum.

The sentence may be appealed at the Court of Appeal in a 15-day period.

The Party of Socialists started collecting signatures for the organization of a plebiscite on dismissing Chisinau mayor Dorin Chirtoaca on 11 May 2017. The initiative group was given 60 days, during which it had to collect about 64,000 signatures.

More than 160,000 votes are needed in order to dismiss Dorin Chirtoaca from office.

The Chisinau mayor is presently under home arrest, being suspected of influence peddling in the file on paid parkings from the Chisinau municipality.
