Moldova celebrates Constitution Day

Chisinau, 28 July /MOLDPRES/ – The Republic of Moldova marks the 23rd anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, today.

On this occasion, a solemn ceremony was held at the Palace of the Republic, attended by several senior officials, as well as the presidents of the Constitutional Courts of Romania, Lithuania, Germany and Ukraine.

Present at the event, Parliament Speaker, Andrian Candu, said that the Supreme Law was the basis for respecting the rights and values ​​of the democratic state. "The Constitution is the guarantor of a sovereign country and assures the prerogative of the rule of law and human freedom. The Constitution has made and will make the law in Moldova, and we now need more than ever to reach the international norms and ensure their observance," said Candu.

At his turn, Prime Minister, Pavel Filip, pointed out that the Supreme Law represented the first benchmark in public action, ensuring human justice and freedom. "On this day, we can analyze the evolution of democracy in our country, as well as establish the priorities that will form the basis of our subsequent actions. The public and political institutions must work for the good of citizens. The priority is to be solidary and to maintain dialogue and cooperation, just so we can progress on the European path. It is necessary to further aspire to a better life and a decent living as in the European Union,” said Filip.

Also, the President of the Constitutional Court, Tudor Pantiru, said that this day had the beautiful tradition of marking the feast of the Supreme State Law. "The Constitution is the legal act that defines the ideologies and democratic models of society. The supreme law, during these years, has been the first to help strengthen Moldova's independence," said Pantiru.

The Constitution of the Republic of Moldova was adopted on 29 July 1994 and entered into force on 27 August 1994. The supreme law provides that Moldova is a sovereign, independent, unitary and indivisible state.
