Chisinau, 7 August /MOLDPRES/ - The deputy mayor of Chisinau, Nistor Grozavu, has taken over the office of acting mayor of the Moldovan capital.

Contacted by MOLDPRES, the jurist of Chisinau’s city hall, Valeriu Bogdan, said that “under the legislation, after the Chisinau mayor has been suspended from office, automatically, deputy mayor of the capital takes over the office of acting mayor.”

For his part, the head of the Chisinau city hall’s press service, Vadim Brinzaniuc, said that Grozavu had been exercised the powers of the Moldovan capital’s general mayor starting from 2 August. According to the court’s ruling, given that he is the only deputy mayor, Mr. Grozavu exercises the office of acting general mayor of the capital. The position will be held till the law court issues the final decision,” Brinzaniuc noted.

In late last July, Dorin Chirtoaca was suspended from the office of general mayor of Chisinau municipality till the issuance of a final decision.

The case prosecutor at that time said that “the provisional suspension from office is necessary, as more witnesses are to be heard, who are in close relation with the capital’s mayor, so that there is a risk that the persons be influenced.”

Dorin Chirtoaca in late May 2017 was detained by anticorruption prosecutors, being suspected of influence peddling in a file on paid parkings. Presently, Chirtoaca is prosecuted under home arrest.

At the same time, the deputy mayor of Chisinau, Nistor Grozavu, also has a status of accused person in the file on paid parkings. In late last May, Grozavu was released from home arrest and is presently prosecuted under legal restrictions.
