Chisinau, 14 August /MOLDPRES/ – The Association of Hunters and Fishermen announced about the beginning of the hunting season 2017-2018, today. It will start on 19 August 2017 and will end on 25 February 2018.

During a press conference, the President of the Republican Council of the Society of Hunters and Fishermen, Oleg Ciocoi, mentioned that in this respect, on 10 August, the Government of Moldova adopted a decision, imposing limits on harvesting hunting in the regions of Moldova.

Thus, during the hunting season 2017-2018, it is permitted hunting of 1 million 137 thousand rabbits, pigeons, quail, pheasants, geese, ducks, pork chanterelles, tusks and lichens and 420 wild boars.

Oleg Ciocoi believes that the decision to restrict hunting in the recent two years to certain species of animals was wrong because a ban on hunting for a species could lead to an increase or decrease in the number of other species.

A conclusive proof in this respect, he said, is that over the past few years the number of foxes has increased excessively, and in Moldova there have appeared jackals, destroying wild and domestic birds.

Also, Oleg Ciocoi called for tightening imposing of sanctions upon poachers, including the seizure of transport and the hunting weapon. "The true hunter goes to hunting not for meat but for pleasure," said Oleg Ciocoi.

According to the lawyer of the Society, Sergiu Crudu, the aim of the hunters is not to destroy the animals, but to multiply them, and those who are against the hunt do not understand what the benefits are.

"They hunt for the maintenance of the ecological balance, so that hunting species develop normally and do not cause damage to both agricultural crops and other species of hunting, but also to biodiversity," said Sergiu Crudu.

The Society of Hunters and Fishermen counts over 15,000 members, who have the right to hunt in areas permitted by law.
