Chisinau, 28 September /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova and Romania will construct a new road bridge across the Prut river, nearby the western Ungheni city. The observance of the international and national requirements concerning the protection of the environment at the building of the bridge were discussed during a today’s meeting between Deputy Prime Minister, Economics and Infrastructure Minister Octavian Calmic and Romanian Deputy Prime Minister, Environment Minister Gratiela-Leocadia Gavrilescu.

The two countries are connected by nine bridges, of which six road ones. The most demanded bridges are Albita-Leuseni, Sculeni-Sculeni, Galati-Giurgiulesti.

The construction of a new bridge, endowed with a customs and state border crossing control infrastructure, will contribute not only to the boosting of the bilateral relations between Romania and Moldova, speeding up of the goods flow, but will also create possibilities both to the residents of the two states and citizens of other countries to quicker move from one bank of the Prut river to another, the deputy prime ministers said.

Official statistics shows that Romania is the biggest sales market for Moldovan goods, with a share of 24.59 per cent in the first seven months of 2017 and starting from 2014, Romania has been ranking first among the partner countries from which Moldova imports goods. According to the National Statistics Bureau, most foreign citizens who crossed the state border in the first half of this year were recorded from Romania, respectively 55.7 per cent of all crossings of 1.7 million persons.

Octavian Calmic and Gratiela-Leocadia Gavrilescu tackled also other issues on the environment, existing along the Prut river, as well as in other zones of common interest along the Moldovan-Romanian border. In the context, the two deputy prime ministers agreed on establishing a more efficient dialogue between experts from the two countries, in order to work out and implement bilateral projects, which would help remove the problems on environment on the entire segment of the Moldovan-Romanian border and the zones adjacent to it.
