Germany today marks Unity Day

Chisinau, 3 October /MOLDPRES/ - The Federal Republic of Germany today marks its National Day – German Unity Day from 3 October 1990.  

Germany has an area of 357,000 square km and a population of 82.6 million residents – the country with the largest number of residents of the European Union member states.

Germany is a parliamentary federal republic, made up of 16 states, named Lands. Its capital is the Berlin city, with a population of 3.4 million residents. Germany was a founding member of the European Communities in 1957, which became European Union in 1993. Germany is a member of the United Nations Organizations, NATO, G8, G20 and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.    

The German contributions to the world culture are numerous. Germany was the birthplace of famous composers, such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner, poets like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, philosophers like Immanuel Kant, Georg Hegel, Karl Marx or Friedrich Nietzsche.    

Germany is one of the countries with the most famous researchers in diverse scientific fields. As many as 103 Germans received the Nobel Prize. The work of Albert Einstein and Max Planck was decisive for the foundation of the modern physics, which Werner Heisenberg and Max Born developed subsequently. They were preceded by such physicists as Hermann von Helmholtz, Joseph von Fraunhofer and Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the X rays, called in German Röntgenstrahlen. This achievement made him the first winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1901.      

The German industry is one of the most developed worldwide. Germany exports industrial machines and equipment, transport means, metallurgical, chemical and food products. It imports iron ores, non-ferrous metals, oil and oils products, raw materials for the textile industry.   

The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Germany were established on 30 April 1992. Julia Monar is Germany’s Ambassador to Moldova and Oleg Serebrian is Moldova’s Ambassador to Germany.   

The foreign trade between Moldova and Germany recorded a sum of 443.06 million dollars in 2016 (+1.038 per cent against 2015). In terms of the volume of trade exchanges, Germany ranks fourth among the partner countries, at the world level, with which Moldova has commercial ties, with a share of 7.3 per cent in Moldova’s overall trade. At the same time, Germany is on the third position in EU after Romania and Italy. During January-June 2017, the foreign trade with Germany amounted to 244.8 million dollars, of which the export stands at 71 million dollars and the import – at 173.8 million dollars.  

Over 400 enterprises with German capital work in Moldova, with Germany ranking fifth among the countries which invested in Moldova. Dräxlmaier, Südzucker, Mabanaft, Knauf, Metro, Steilmann and Schenker are among the biggest companies.
