First national centre of creative industries to be opened in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 12 October /MOLDPRES/ - The first national centre of creative industries, Creative Hub, is to be opened in late 2018. The centre will be constructed in the yard of the education block of the Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy on the 31 August Street from Chisinau and will provide room of activity to professional people, organizations and enterprises in the field.    

A Memorandum of Understanding between the Moldova Competitiveness Project, financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Swedish government, Education, Culture and Research Ministry, Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy (AMTAP) and Association of Creative Companies from Moldova (COR) was signed for the construction of the Creative Hub.     

In her speech, Ambassador of Sweden to Moldova Signe Burgstaller said that the National Centre for Creative Industries, known also as Creative Hub, will provide representatives of creative industries room where they could develop, so as to become a central point for the creative entrepreneurship, which, as a result, will encourage the economic growth. According to the official, the creative industry generates four per cent of the Gross Domestic Product in the European Union countries and Sweden, and more than 300 hubs work in EU.   

For her part, Head of the USAID Mission Moldova, Karen Hilliard, said that the creative industries in Moldova recorded a 56-per cent annual growth rate and over 5,000 are employed in this sector, mostly young people. “By investing in creating industries, we support the development of young people, through creation of high value-added jobs, so that they follow their career here, in the country,” Karen Hilliard stressed.  

In the context, Education, Culture and Research Minister Monica Babuc noted that this creative hub, due to be built in the historical centre of Chisinau, would provide creative people new opportunities of development. “We dreamt to open such a building in Moldova, according to the model of the ones from abroad, so that representatives of the local creative industries can develop start-ups and establish partnerships with business people from abroad. We will be able to bring money to the country through these creative industries,” Monica Babuc said.   

Creative Hub is set to become an engine of innovation, which contributes to the development of the creative entrepreneurship and stimulates the exchange of know-how and ideas. The national centre of creative industries will have an area of 400 square metres and will work as a platform of alternative studying, with a capacity of training at least 1,000 persons yearly, at the same time, providing assistance for companies in the sector.  

Also, the Centre will make available: room for co-working for creative young people, five offices, room for events (workshops, conferences, master-classes, etc.), session hall, library, creative services of graphic, audio and video products, indoors design, architecture, animation, creation of online games, alternative education, which implies participation in acceleration programmes, specialized courses, mentoring programmes, etc.      

To construct the Creative Hub, Moldova Competitiveness Project, financed by USAID, will invest 350,000 dollars, the Education, Culture and Research Ministry will provide about 100,000 dollars (two million lei) and the Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy will make available the land for the construction of the building and a wing of the first floor of the block of the Fine Arts Faculty. The overall investments in the Creative Hub are estimated to amount to 12 million lei. Students will benefit from the centre’s activity starting from next spring, through the renovated wing of the Fine Arts Faculty and the works of construction of the Hub’s building are to end in late 2018.
