Moldovan president disagrees with decision of Constitutional Court

Chisinau, 17 October /MOLDPRES/ – Moldovan President, Igor Dodon, criticized the decision of the Constitutional Court at a press conference today, which he described as a "usurpation of state power".

Igor Dodon announced he would not sign appointment of Eugen Sturza as Defence Minister, nor recognize him if he was called by someone else. "What happened today shows the necessity of Moldova's transition to a presidential state. Early elections and presidential elections are the only solution," said Dodon.

Today, the judges of the Constitutional Court of Moldova (CCM) examined the government's referral in September on the powers of the head of state to the appointment of ministers. According to the decision of the CCM, the President has the right to verify the candidacy of the candidate nominated by the Prime Minister for a position, but he has no right to veto his proposal. And the deliberate refusal of the head of the state to appoint a minister is "temporary impossibility to exercise his duties and justifies the establishment of interim office, which is ensured in order by the President of the Parliament or by the Prime Minister".

Earlier, the head of state, Igor Dodon, repeatedly rejected Eugen Sturza's candidacy, proposed by the parliamentary majority for the post of Defence Minister.
