Moldovan government declares national state of emergency in connection with COVID-19 infection

Chisinau, 16 March /MOLDPRES/ - The government of Moldova has declared state of emergency in the country. The cabinet members took a decision to this effect at a today evening meeting, in the context of the measures for preventing the spread of the COVID-19 new-type coronavirus.  

The national state of emergency was recommended by the Commission for Emergency Situation and was earlier today demanded by head of state Igor Dodon within an appeal to the citizens.  

Under the legislation, the state of emergency is declared at a proposal by Moldova’s president or government and is approved by the parliament. The duration of the state of emergency does not exceed 60 days and depending on the evolution of the situation, the head of state or the cabinet can demand the prolongation or shortening of the duration of the state of emergency, as well as the extension or diminishing of its action area.  

During the state of emergency, depending on the concrete situation, decision-makers can enforce the following actions: establishing a special regime of entrance and exit from the country; instructing the rationalization of the consumption of foodstuffs and other essential products; introduction of the quarantine regime and the taking of compulsory sanitary and anti-epidemic measures; carrying out, in the way established by law, of requisitions of goods, in order to prevent and liquidate the consequences of the situations which imposed the declaring of the state of emergency; establishing  a special working regime for economic agents and public institutions, settlement of actions as to their activity, necessary for carrying out works of rescue and de-blocking and other non-postponable works, etc.   

Last week, the World Health Organization declared pandemic of coronavirus. According to the official information, 29 cases of infection with COVID-19 virus are recorded in Moldova.
