Vineyards, cabbage rolls transposed into monumental art on facade of Vienna’s Ringturm

The vineyard and the simple gestures of preparing cabbage rolls have become a source of inspiration for a large-scale artwork by Moldovan artist Pavel Braila, who has transformed the facade of Vienna’s Ringturm building into a visual manifesto dedicated to tradition and cultural identity.

The installation, titled Your Happiness is in Your Own Hands, covers approximately 4,000 square meters and, in a minimalist visual language, reinterprets the traditional culinary process by reducing it to a sequence of hand movements.

“Traditions and cultural customs come to life through action, through what we pass on and constantly reinterpret. They create connections, provide identity and can convey a sense of home, no matter where we are. I am especially pleased that my work can be seen across 4,000 square meters in the public space of the Ringturm. It invites people to share experiences and make them visible in everyday life. This is where the subtle message of the project lies: that belonging, memories and even happiness are in our own hands,” says Pavel Braila.

The work explores the idea of transmitting customs and cultural continuity, suggesting the connection between memory, belonging and the feeling of “home,” regardless of distance. At the same time, the project addresses such themes as migration and reconnection with one’s roots.

The installation is part of the Ringturm Wrapping project, carried out in Vienna since 2006, one of the most important public art initiatives in Austria, through which the facade of the building is periodically covered with large-scale contemporary artworks.
