Largest energy storage system of Moldova launched in Radeni; Energy minister says investment promises competitive prices for consumers

The largest battery energy storage system (BESS) of Moldova has been launched in the village of Radeni, central Straseni district. The project, with a capacity of 60 MWh, is integrated with a 50 MW photovoltaic park and is considered a strategic investment for the modernization of the energy sector.

The new system allows the storage of energy produced during periods of overproduction – when prices are low or even negative – and its use during peak consumption hours, when energy is more expensive. In this way, the project directly contributes to stabilizing the electricity grid and to the more efficient use of renewable energy.

“This investment is an indispensable element of the country’s new energy architecture. Through its ability to store energy produced during periods of overproduction and deliver it during peak hours, the system supports grid stability and helps shape more competitive prices for consumers,” emphasized Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu.

The official also noted that the project was the result of effective cooperation between private investors, state-owned enterprises and the government, serving as an example for the development of the renewable energy sector of Moldova.

According to specialists, the stored energy will be traded depending on prices on the day-ahead market (OPCOM), which allows optimal capitalization of price differences between low-consumption and peak-consumption intervals.

The photovoltaic park was built in record time, in approximately eight months, as the result of an investment made by private investors in collaboration with state authorities – a model increasingly common in the energy sector. The project is part of Moldova’s strategy to increase the share of renewable energy, reduce dependence on imports and align with European standards in the energy field.
