Romania accelerates strategic Vulcanesti–Chisinau project: “A pillar of Moldova’s energy security and European future”

The Vulcanesti–Chisinau Overhead Power Line project has entered its final implementation stage and is considered one of the most important strategic projects for the energy security and European future of Moldova. Romania stays deeply involved in accelerating this critical infrastructure, underlined the Romanian Ambassador to Moldova Cristian-Leon Turcanu.

“Romania remains deeply involved in accelerating this critical infrastructure project, which will strengthen the connection of Moldova to the European energy market and will contribute to enhancing regional energy security,” said the Romanian diplomat.

The Romanian diplomat noted that a working meeting dedicated to completing the final stage of the project and coordinating the process of operationalizing the power line had taken place at the Romanian Embassy in Chisinau. The discussions were attended by representatives of the Moldova’s Energy Ministry, the Energy Projects Implementation Unit, the company Moldelectrica, as well as representatives of the Siemens–Electromontaj consortium from Romania.

“I emphasized the importance of efficient coordination and of maintaining a sustained implementation pace, so that this strategic project can become, as soon as possible, a tangible result for citizens and an additional pillar of regional security and stability,” said Cristian-Leon Turcanu.

The Vulcanesti–Chisinau Overhead Power Line has a length of approximately 158 kilometers and will connect the south of the country to the capital through a modern electricity transmission infrastructure. The project includes the construction of a 400 kV overhead power line and the modernization of the Vulcanesti and Chisinau substations. The new interconnection will allow the transmission of electricity from Romania and from the European market to Moldova, reducing dependence on energy sources from the east.

The Moldovan authorities consider the project essential for integrating the national energy system into the European ENTSO-E network and for strengthening the energy independence of Moldova, in the context of regional challenges triggered  by the war in Ukraine and by the energy crises of recent years.
