Romania sends energy across Prut River to support Moldova

Moldova is receiving electricity from Romania, after the country was been left partially without power today morning, due to a voltage drop on the 400 kV Isaccea–Vulcanesti–MGRES (Kuchurgan power station) line. Sources from Romania’s national energy system told economica.net that work was currently underway to restore power to consumption points from Romania.

Transelectrica charts show that energy exports to Moldova are being carried out, including through the three medium-voltage lines that cross the Prut River. At 12:00, the power transmitted from Romania to the Moldovan grid was 185 MW, according to economica.net.

The technical failure was caused by serious problems in Ukraine’s power grid, which has been affected by the ongoing conflict, but was not the result of bombardments. Authorities emphasize that the massive outages are not related to weather conditions, but are a consequence of the vulnerability of the system interconnected with the Ukrainian grid.

Experts warn that, as long as energy infrastructure in Ukraine remains under siege, the risk of cascading disconnections in Moldova will persist, affecting the stability of supply to household consumers and businesses.

As a long-term solution, officials and experts are counting on accelerating interconnection projects with Romania and developing Moldova’s own electricity generation capacities, adapted to the national budget, in order to reduce dependence on external grids located in high-risk areas.

Despite the incident, the situation is being monitored by system operators, and citizens are urged to stay calm. Technical teams are working to fully restore voltage and authorities promise continued efforts to strengthen the country’s energy independence and security.
