VIDEO // Train to the Airport: successful Test on Chisinau–Revaca route; new railway line project enters preparation phase

The Chisinau–Revaca railway segment was tested after the completion of repair work on this portion of the railway. Thus, following interventions that included replacing worn sleepers and rails in degraded areas, it became possible to lift speed restrictions, allowing for a real assessment of the line's capacity.

The test train covered the 10 kilometers between the Central Station and Revaca station in 9 minutes, a result considered positive by the technical team and a promising indicator for the implementation of future regular routes.

The testing aimed to estimate travel time, verify traffic stability and analyze the potential for speed increase, necessary elements for defining an efficient urban rail transport schedule. Preliminary evaluations show that, with additional upgrades, travel time could be further optimized, according to the Railway of Moldova enterprise (CFM).

The tested section represents the core of the project aiming to launch a fast rail link between the city center and the Eugen Doga International Airport. The project, supported by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, aims to provide a modern alternative to road transport, significantly reducing the time required for passengers to reach the airport.

Based on recent test estimates, the train can reach from the Central Station to Revaca in approximately 12 minutes, and to Sangera - in about 22 minutes. The connection from Revaca to the airport will be integrated into a fast route, ensuring predictable, convenient and constant transfers, regardless of road traffic.

For the commercial operation of the line, authorities have announced the need to modernize the Revaca and Sangera stations, install passenger access infrastructure, and increase the average speed to 50 km/h. The railway route to the airport is planned for launch in the spring of 2026 and will be partially funded by European funds.

The project will have multiple benefits, such as reducing travel time to the airport, decongesting Chisinau’s main roads, predictability for flights and transfers, modernization of urban transport and integration with the European mobility network. The project is one of the most important transport initiatives of the capital in recent years and marks a decisive step towards developing a fast, green and efficient link between the Moldovan capital and the country's main airport.
