VIDEO // Work continues on Moldova's largest water main: central region’s water supply project moves forward

The works under the project Improvement of Water Infrastructure in Central Moldova, considered the most important drinking water supply project in the Republic of Moldova, are in full swing, even in winter conditions. Representatives of the implementation team carried out a monitoring visit on Monday, February 16, to the construction sites opened in several localities of the Central Region.

The project aims to ensure safe and constant access to quality drinking water for the residents of the region, an essential service for public health, economic development, and improving the standard of living.

Work progress

According to data presented by the implementers, more than 19.3 kilometers of ductile iron trunk pipeline have been built so far, with diameters between 500 and 600 millimeters. In parallel, preparations continue for concreting the columns of the main pumping station in the locality of Tuzara.

Seven teams of workers are operating: in Bucovăț, two teams are installing the 500 mm diameter pipeline; in Sireți, one team is working; in Vatra, two teams are installing the 600 mm diameter pipe; works to cross under the road in the Ghidighici area are also ongoing.

In situations where weather conditions do not allow compliance with quality and safety standards, some operations are temporarily suspended, especially works on manholes, anchor blocks, or reservoirs. Those responsible emphasize that worker safety and the durability of the investment remain priorities.

A strategic project for the region

The project is being implemented by the Government of the Republic of Moldova, through the Central Regional Development Agency, with financial support from the Federal Government of Germany, provided via the development bank KfW.

The initiative foresees the construction of an approximately 53‑kilometer main aqueduct that will connect Chișinău with Strășeni and Călărași districts. After completion, the system will enable the extension of centralized drinking water supply to more localities in the central part of the country, contributing to reducing water shortages, improving sanitary conditions, and modernizing public infrastructure.

The authorities state that the investment represents a major step toward modernizing public services and bringing living standards in rural communities closer to those in urban areas.
