Chisinau, 12 June /MOLDPRES/- The Russian Federation today celebrates National Day, and the Declaration of Sovereignty of the country was adopted on 12 June 1990.
This celebration was officially named the Day of Russia in 2002 and since then it has been marked throughout the country.
Russia is a country that stretches over vast territory in Europe and Asia. With an area of 17,101,081 km², Russia is the largest country in the world, nearly twice as large as the territory of the second largest country, Canada. However, Russia is only the eighth country in terms of population, with 146.8 million inhabitants.
Most of the territory, population and industrial production of the Soviet Union, one of the two superpowers of the world remained in Russia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia's role on the world stage was greatly diminished compared to that of the USSR. On 27 December 1991, the Russian Federation took over the Soviet Union's official seat in the UN Security Council. Russia is also a member of the CIS, Russia-Belarus Union, OSCE, and so on.
It exports products of the machine building industry (tractors, cars, airplanes, machine tools, electrical and electronic equipment), fuels, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, chemicals, building materials, wood and wood materials, paper and others. It imports industrial equipment, textiles, agricultural products and consumer goods.
In 2018, Russia's gross domestic product amounted to 4,152 trillion dollars, ranking sixth in the world, and per capita - 28,957 dollars.
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation were established on 6 April 1992.
In 2018, exports of Moldovan goods to Russia, compared to 2017, decreased by 14.1% - to 218.6 million dollars. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, deliveries of Russian products to Moldova in 2018 compared to the previous year increased by 26.1% to 720.8 million dollars.
At the same time, the share of Russia in Moldovan exports decreased from 10.5% to 8.08%, whereas imports increased from 11.83% to 12.51%. By the end of 2018, Russia ranked fourth among the largest Moldovan partners in terms of purchases of Moldovan products after Romania, Italy and Germany. At the same time, it ranks 2nd in the supply of products to the Republic of Moldova.
The negative trade balance of the Republic of Moldova with the Russian Federation in 2018 amounted to 502.2 million dollars, up by 1.6 times than in 2017. National Bureau of Statistics does not take into account the commercial and economic operations of Transnistrian companies.
