The construction works at the Vulcanesti Electrical Substation have been completed, marking an important milestone for the commissioning of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau Overhead Power Line, one of the largest energy infrastructure projects of Moldova.

During the final stages, the necessary technical tests were carried out and the results confirmed that the installations are ready for energization and powering up. At the same time, all three phases of the substation have been connected and the final technical adjustments are currently being made before commissioning.

The completion of the construction works and the successful tests allow the project to move to the energization phase of the Vulcanesti Electrical Substation and its associated infrastructure. The acceptance procedures are to be carried out in the immediate future.

The electrical substations in Vulcanesti and Chisinau are key assets for the commissioning of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau Energy Independence Line.

In parallel, works are ongoing at the Chisinau Electrical Substation: construction of the exterior container has been completed and the installation of protection cabinets continues. The responsible teams are preparing the necessary connections for integrating the substation into the national power system.

“For the commissioning of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau Line, the Chisinau Electrical Substation also needs to be completed, where the works are in their final phase. Commissioning this overhead line will eliminate the risk of energy blackmail, given that the current line passes through the Kuchurgan power plant, which is not located on the territory controlled by Moldova, creating the risk of a discretionary disconnection. The Independence Line will allow the transmission of electricity from Romania and the European market directly to the center of the country, bypassing the Kuchurgan hub,” said Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu.

The Vulcanesti–Chisinau Overhead Power Line was completed in November 2025, has a length of approximately 157 kilometers and will connect the 400 kV Vulcanesti Electrical Substation with the 330 kV Chisinau Electrical Substation. The project is being implemented under the Power System Development Project, financed by the World Bank Group.
