Prime Minister paid final tribute to former MP Ilie Ilașcu

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu attended the farewell ceremony held in Chișinău, in memory of the fighter for independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, former deputy of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, Senator in the Romanian Parliament - Ilie Ilașcu. He passed away at the age of 73 on 17 November 2025, and is being buried today at Bellu Cemetery in Bucharest.

'He is the man who dedicated his life to the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. With his head held high, even when threatened and tortured, Ilie Ilașcu defended our national identity and our right to be free with dignity. It is important to honor his memory, to learn from the sacrifice he made, and to pass this lesson of courage in the fight for freedom and independence to future generations,' mentioned Munteanu.

Ilie Ilașcu was born on July 30, 1952, in the village of Taxobeni, Fălești district. Since 1988, he became one of the founders of the National Liberation Movement in Bessarabia. In 1992, Ilie Ilașcu was arbitrarily arrested in the Transnistrian region by individuals from the 14th Army of the former USSR. He was sentenced to death and held in detention for 9 years, becoming a symbol of resilience and courage in the face of political repression. Following immense international pressure and Romania's diplomatic efforts, Ilie Ilașcu was released on 5 May 2001.

20 November 2025 is a day of national mourning, state flags are flown at half-mast, and public institutions and citizens are encouraged to observe a moment of silence in memory of Ilie Ilașcu.
