Moldova has the opportunity to harness artificial intelligence, in order to accelerate economic development, modernize public services and improve the performance of state institutions. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan spoke about the potential of artificial intelligence for the development of the country at the opening of Moldova AI Hub, an event held in Chisinau on October 15–16.

The PM emphasized that new technologies gave small countries the chance to close development gaps and make significant technological leaps: “We cannot compete with large countries in terms of budgets for technological infrastructure, but we can compete through agility, speed and adaptability. It would be a mistake not to seize this opportunity,” said Prime Minister Vasile Tofan.

The prime minister highlighted that artificial intelligence can transform the way the state interacts with citizens and organizes its internal processes. In this regard, the government is open to testing innovative solutions in the delivery of public services, including in areas where procedures are complicated, time-consuming or pose corruption risks.

The PM noted the possibility of developing pilot projects through which artificial intelligence could be used, for example, in administrative processes or the distribution of subsidies. According to him, Moldova can become a testing ground for technological solutions that, once validated, could also be implemented in other countries.

“We need courage, vision and the capacity to take advantage of this moment. By launching Moldova AI Hub, we are taking an important step in this direction,” said Vasile Tofan.

Moldova AI Hub is a collaborative initiative between the public sector, the business community and academia, focused on developing artificial intelligence skills and applying this technology in the economy and public administration.

The launch event brought together approximately 100 specialists and representatives of public institutions, companies, universities and international partners. The two-day agenda includes discussions on the use of artificial intelligence in public services, the development of applied projects, data management and the risks associated with new technologies, as well as practical sessions for the public sector, the business community and the financial sector.
