Moldovan president attends festivity on marking 28th anniversary of Central Electoral Commission's permanent activity
President Maia Sandu today participated in a festivity dedicated to marking 28 years of permanent activity of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC). The event that brought together representatives of central public authorities, international development partners, media and civil society.
In her speech, the head of state emphasized the essential role of the Central Electoral Commission in protecting the integrity of elections, in the context of increasingly complex challenges posed by disinformation, cyberattacks and illegal financing of parties and electoral campaigns.
‘’We have finally been able to see that the rules regarding political financing are truly applied, not just declared,’’ the Moldovan president pointed out. She emphasized that the decisive actions of the CEC had allowed the prevention, documentation and sanctioning according to legal competences.
At the same time, the president reaffirmed the importance of constant defense of democracy by the entire society: ‘’Democracy does not defend itself. Democracy itself is a daily choice and a shared responsibility. It must be protected with determination and firmness.’’
