Moldovan Prime Minister meets with Secretary General of Council of Europe
The strengthening of cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe, as well as measures for implementing the priorities of the Moldovan presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe were discussed at today's meeting between Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the recent visit to Brussels was productive and the Government is working intensively to achieve the strategic goal of Moldova's accession to the EU. "We want to show our citizens that joining the EU does not only mean adjusting to certain requirements, but also better education and healthcare services, infrastructure projects, a more favorable business environment, and greater security," he said.
Priority issues during the period in which the Republic of Moldova holds the six-month presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe include strengthening democracy, defending human rights, continuing to counter disinformation and maintaining support for Ukraine. The action plan for the Republic of Moldova 2025-2028 includes assistance for justice reform, fighting corruption, strengthening media legislation, protecting human rights, and supporting EU accession efforts.
In this context, Berset appreciated the conduct of a free and fair election this autumn, despite hybrid attacks. The officials emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to more effectively combat foreign information interference and to increase the population's resilience to disinformation.
On 20-21 November, Berset is participating in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) meetings in Chișinău, which bring together about 60 parliamentarians from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe, hosted by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.
The Council of Europe is an international organization dedicated to the protection of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. The Republic of Moldova joined the Council of Europe on 13 July 1995, and previously held the Presidency of the organization's Committee of Ministers in 2003.
