PM, UN Refugee Agency's representative discuss support for refugees in Moldova
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu today met the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Moldova, Anne-Marie Deutschlander. The officials discussed the support provided to refugees from Moldova and ways to facilitate their social inclusion.
PM Alexandru Munteanu expressed gratitude for the UNHCR's contribution to efficiently managing the large influx of refugees following the Russian aggression in Ukraine, through financial assistance and expertise. The prime minister emphasized that the government was creating the necessary conditions in the health sector, in the educational system, and on the labor market for refugees to integrate socially. Since the beginning of the war, about 1.9 million Ukrainian refugees have passed through Moldova, with over 130,000 choosing to stay, of whom over 20,000 are preschool or school-aged children.
For her part, UNHCR representative Anne-Marie Deutschlander assured that the organization would continue to support Moldova’s authorities in this complex process: “We will help you develop sustainable solutions for the people who choose to stay here, with increased attention to vulnerable groups. We are the voice of the refugees and, together with the authorities here, we work to provide them with better conditions.”
UNHCR - the UN Refugee Agency is a global organization dedicated to protecting rights and building a better future for people forced to leave their homes due to conflict and persecution. Moldova is an important host country for refugees from Ukraine: Moldova has received more refugees per capita than any other state in the region and is taking the necessary measures to integrate them into educational institutions, the workforce and the community, as well as helping them to feel like valuable members of society.
