November 20 declared National Day of Mourning in Moldova in memory of Ilie Ilascu
President Maia Sandu has signed a decree declaring November 20, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning in memory of Ilie Ilascu, a symbol of resistance and the fight for the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. Everyone who respected Ilie Ilascu is invited to symbolically say goodbye at the National Palace on Thursday, from 10:00 to 13:00.
In her message, the head of state said:
“On Thursday, when Ilie Ilascu will be buried at Bellu Cemetery in Bucharest, we declare a day of mourning in memory of the hero of the Republic of Moldova. A man facing an aggressive state. Who nonetheless resisted. Not only did he resist - but he remained free, with a pure fight and dignified words. It is important to pass on his lesson of patriotism to younger generations. His sacrifices must remain in our memory and offer us - in moments of difficulty - that so necessary faith in the nation's power to shape its destiny.”
On this day, the State Flag of the Republic of Moldova will be flown at half-mast throughout the country's territory, as well as at the Moldovan diplomatic and consular missions abroad.
Public authorities, institutions, enterprises and organizations are urged to refrain from organizing entertainment events and media institutions are asked to adapt their programs and editorial content to the nature of the day of mourning.
At 12:00, a moment of silence will be observed throughout the country in tribute to Ilie Ilascu.
Also on November 20, the Teleradio-Moldova company will broadcast programmes from its archive dedicated to the life and work of Ilie Ilascu.
