Marta Kos: You have won against Russia. Kremlin spent three to four hundred million euros to derail you
The Republic of Moldova has triumphed in its struggle against Russia, which attempted to divert our country from the European path. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos made the statement today. The official emphasized that this was possible due to the reforms implemented in recent years and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
"Russia spent between three to four hundred million euros to derail you from the European path. (...) You have won against Russia. Russia wanted to intervene, but you have won. We have won. And I am so very proud of you," stated Marta Kos at the conference "Enlargement Report 2025: Progress and Future Priorities of the Republic of Moldova," organized today in Chisinau.
The European official stated that the success achieved by our country in the latest electoral exercises, where citizens reaffirmed their support for the European path, is due to the strengthening of resilience and democratic institutions.
"I tell those in Brussels that one of the successes of the latest parliamentary elections is related to your fight, your increasingly strong democratic institutions. You have managed to combat illegal actions, you have been able to combat vote-buying. Similarly, strong institutions are what we need all over Europe," said Marta Kos.
In this regard, the European Commissioner for Enlargement announced that tomorrow, in Brussels, the "European Democratic Shield" strategy will be adopted, and the Republic of Moldova is a part of it.
"Tomorrow, in Brussels, we will adopt the "European Democratic Shield" strategy, which pertains to protecting democracy in Europe. Not only in the Republic of Moldova or in other candidate states, but also within the European Union. And I am pleased that part of this strategy regarding the democratic shield will be dedicated to the Republic of Moldova. You will have a special place as a good example, as a good practice regarding how we can ensure a resilient democracy. This means that we all can learn from you," stated Marta Kos.
The European official stressed that the Republic of Moldova has impressed Europe with its strength and determination.
"You have made headlines and impressed Europe with your strength and determination. I have been asked many times, is Moldova really that special? Yes, it is. The Republic of Moldova is special. Why? Five elections and a referendum over five years with a consistent message - Europe, we are coming! And we are getting ready! We are preparing a place for you in the European home. We want to see your success and we want to see you taking your place within the EU," she emphasized.
Marta Kos is paying a visit to the Republic of Moldova, shortly after the European Commission adopted the annual Enlargement Package and announced that the Republic of Moldova has made significant progress on its European journey.
This is the fourth visit in the last year to the Republic of Moldova by the European Commissioner for Enlargement and the first after the inauguration of the new government.
