Moldovan parliament speaker says Baltic States represent model for Moldova on path to European integration

The Baltic States represent for Moldova not only reliable partners, but also an example of courage, consistency and political will in the process of accession to the European Union. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has made statements to this effect at during a joint press conference with the participation of President of the Riigikogu of Estonia Lauri Hussar, Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia Daiga Mieriņa, and Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Juozas Olekas.

According to Igor Grosu, the experience of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania shows that the deep transformation of a state is possible when there is political determination and the support of citizens.

“Every time we talk about accession to the European Union, we naturally look to you, because you know what it means to leave a grey area of history, to break dependencies and to firmly choose freedom,” the parliament speaker stressed.

The speaker acknowledged that Moldova missed the common starting point of European integration more than two decades ago, but emphasized that making up for lost time was a responsibility that had been assumed.

“Today we are no longer talking about if, but about when. And this ‘when’ depends on our work, on internal unity and on the support of our European friends,” Igor Grosu declared.

In his speech, the parliament speaker reaffirmed that Moldova’s commitment to European integration was firm and was reconfirmed, including at the parliamentary elections of September 2025, when citizens clearly supported this strategic direction.

Igor Grosu highlighted the concrete support provided by the Baltic States. Estonia is the main partner of Moldova in the process of digitalizing public services, contributing to the creation of more efficient and more transparent institutions. The decision of Estonia to open an embassy in Chisinau, which will become operational in the second half of this year, was also welcomed; this will mean that all three Baltic States will have diplomatic representation in Moldova.

Latvia also contributes to training the new generation of civil servants through training programmes in European law and economics held at the Riga Graduate School of Law, which have also been attended by staff of the parliament’s secretariat. Lithuania supports Moldova in the field of renewable energy through projects for installing solar panels in hospitals, schools and kindergartens, thus helping to strengthen energy independence and reduce costs for public institutions.

In conclusion, the speaker underlined that European integration was a national project, not just a political or economic one, and thanked the Baltic States for their constant support.

“Moldovans are Europeans through their history and through their everyday actions, and on this path, we are accompanied by true friends and partners,” Igor Grosu concluded.

The parliament has opened the 2026 spring parliamentary session. This week, plenary meetings and meetings of the standing committees are scheduled. The parliament will also host two official visits. The parliamentary session begins with the official visit of the parliament speakers from the Baltic States.

On February 3, the inaugural meeting of the spring session will take place, with the participation of President of the Riigikogu of Estonia Lauri Hussar, Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia Daiga Mieriņa and Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Juozas Olekas. The speakers of the parliaments of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will deliver speeches at the solemn meeting.
