Moldovan president revokes state distinctions awarded to president of Judo Federation, coach

President Maia Sandu has revoked, under decree, the decision to confer national awards on two individuals from the sports field: Andrei Golban, president of the Non-Governmental Association, Judo Federation of Moldova, and Grigore Postica, a wrestling coach.

The revocation comes shortly after the spotlight has been refocused on Andrei Golban's past. He was awarded the Order of Honor on October 10, but his name appears in a criminal file.

Golban in 2016 was reportedly detained by prosecution bodies, being suspected that, along with a performance sportsman and a former police officer, he extorted over 13 million Russian rubles from a Moldovan resident in the Russian Federation. At that time, the Moldovan said that Golban and his alleged accomplices were part of a criminal group led by an underworld figure, Grigore Caramalac, alias Bulgaru.
