Moldovan president says peace, freedom can be ensured through accession to EU, strategic relation with Romania central pillar of security, stability, development

In an increasingly uncertain world, marked by geopolitical instability, armed conflicts and strategic rivalry, preserving peace and freedom represents fundamental objectives for Moldova, President Maia Sandu underlined at a today’s    news conference. At the same time, the president noted that the strategic relationship with Romania was a central pillar of security, stability and development.

The president said that, in our region and across the continent, Russia remained a major source of destabilization, and the war against Ukraine continues to pose a significant security risk for Moldova.

“As long as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, the security and resilience of Moldova directly depend on Ukraine’s resilience; firm and consistent support for Ukraine is essential. We will continue to stand by Ukraine and support it with our modest resources and with our firm voice in international forums,” the president noted.

In the context, Maia Sandu outlined two fundamental objectives for the country: preserving peace and remaining in the free and democratic world.

“There is no need to explain why it is important to preserve peace. But in addition to peace, we need freedom, because only in a free and democratic world can we live with dignity. Authoritarian regimes do not respect human dignity and life,” the head of state emphasized.

The president pointed out that foreign policy was a key instrument in the current international context and that it would be oriented toward partnerships with states that support each other “in an increasingly hostile world.”

“The most important partnership for us is with the EU: accession to the European Union is the most realistic strategy for the survival and development of Moldova as part of the free world. The window of opportunity for the implementation of this project is limited and must be used as a priority,” Maia Sandu said.

In the context, the head of state underlined the strategic relationship with Romania:

“The strategic relationship with Romania is a central pillar of security, stability and development, as well as of our European path,” Maia Sandu stressed.

As for the EU accession process, Maia Sandu specified that the priorities were clear: maintaining the political support of all member states, preparing public opinion for the ratification of agreements, promoting the country through political dialogue, visibility, economic integration and cultural diplomacy, as well as ensuring concrete results and credibility on the technical side.
