Moldovan president says Russia sabotages peace talks in Ukraine, while bombarding civilians

Russia is sabotaging peace talks in Ukraine with false claims, while bombing civilians, leaving them without electricity and heating. This is not the behavior of a country seeking peace. President Maia Sandu has conveyed a message to this effect.

The head of state said that Ukraine continued to defend itself and seek peace.

"Russia invaded Ukraine. Ukraine is defending itself and seeking peace, engaging in good faith in a US-mediated peace plan. Russia sabotages peace talks with false claims, while bombing civilians, leaving them without electricity and heating. This is not the behavior of a country seeking peace," Maia Sandu said.

Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump met on Sunday, December 28th, at the Mar-a-Lago residence, at a meeting considered decisive for shaping the peace plan concerning the war in Ukraine. After approximately three hours of discussions, the two leaders held press statements, presenting the main conclusions of the negotiations, marked by significant progress, but also important divergences.

American President Donald Trump informed that an agreement on territorial division had not yet been reached, emphasizing that the status of the Donbas region stayed one of the most sensitive topics.

Shortly thereafter, Russia accused Ukraine, without providing evidence, of attempting to attack President Vladimir Putin's residence. Kyiv dismissed the accusations as unfounded and intended to derail peace talks in the war Russia launched against Ukraine almost four years ago.
