Parliament’s Standing Bureau to examine Government proposal to declare state of emergency in energy sector

Parliament’s Standing Bureau will convene today to examine the Government’s proposal to declare state of emergency in the energy sector. The meeting is scheduled for 16:00, and during it a decision will be made on convening Parliament in an extraordinary session, planned for 17:00.

Today MPs are going to consider the Government’s measures on declaring state of emergency for a period of 60 days.

Speaker Igor Grosu said he ordered the convening of the extraordinary session at 17:00, where Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, together with the directly involved ministers, will present the necessary measures to manage the situation quickly, in a coordinated manner and in the interest of the people.

The decision comes in the context of the deteriorating energy situation caused by attacks by the Russian Federation on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure, which led to the disconnection of the Vulcănești–Isaccea power line, one of the main sources of electricity supply for the Republic of Moldova. Although the four interconnection lines with Romania have been activated, the situation remains complicated.

Today the Government approved a draft decision on declaring state of emergency in the energy sector for a period of 60 days, starting from 25 March. Munteanu said that this is a necessary measure to mobilize resources and to act quickly, in a coordinated way and in the interest of the people.
