VIDEO // Parliament convenes in extraordinary session at 17:00 to examine declaring state of emergency in energy sector

The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova will convene in an extraordinary session today at 17:00 to examine declaring state of emergency in the energy sector, in the context of the crisis caused by Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The announcement was made by Speaker Igor Grosu, who described these actions as “war crimes” and a direct attack on the Republic of Moldova.

“Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure are war crimes, and their goal is to leave thousands of people in the dark. It is also a direct attack against us,” Igor Grosu stated.

According to him, the overnight strikes led to the disconnection of the main power line that supplies the Republic of Moldova – Vulcănești–Isaccea. Although the four interconnection lines with Romania have been activated, the situation remains complicated.

During the extraordinary session, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, together with the responsible ministers will present the necessary measures for declaring state of emergency in the energy sector for a period of 60 days.

“This is a necessary measure in order to act quickly, in a coordinated way and in the interest of the people,” he underlined.

Today Munteanu announced the urgent convening of a Government meeting at 13:00 to manage the situation created in the energy sector.
