VIDEO // Prime Minister urgently convenes cabinet meeting

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced the urgent convening today of a Government meeting to manage the situation in the energy sector, following Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure.

According to the official, what is happening today in the energy sector of the Republic of Moldova is not an accident.

“The strikes during the night led to the disconnection of the main Vulcănești–Isaccea power line, which supplies the country. The four interconnection lines with Romania have been activated, but the situation remains complicated. Russia is solely responsible for this situation,” stated Alexandru Munteanu.

He noted that, in this context, the Government has the obligation to intervene promptly and responsibly.

“That is why I have convened today, at 1:00 p.m., a Government meeting and we will propose declaring state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days. This is not a measure of panic, but of responsibility. It is a necessary measure to act quickly, in a coordinated manner and in the interest of the people,” he specified.

The Prime Minister mentioned that later this afternoon he will go to Parliament, together with the ministers and officials directly involved in managing the situation, to present all the arguments and necessary measures and to request the support of the MPs.

Munteanu noted that declaring the state of emergency will allow the authorities to act more rapidly, to mobilize additional resources, to protect critical infrastructure and, if necessary, to apply additional measures to limit the effects of the crisis.

He urged citizens to obtain information only from official sources and said that the Ministry of Energy will provide further updates on the energy sector.
