Call to the parliament of Romania: two academicians call for adoption of law on branch of Romanian of Academy in Chisinau

The Romanian Academy and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM) have launched a joint call to the parliament of Romania to support and adopt legislative amendments regarding the creation of a branch of the Romanian Academy in Chisinau. The call today was signed by the President of the Romanian Academy Ioan-Aurel Pop and ASM President Ion Tighineanu. The academicians say that this initiative strengthens the cultural and scientific unity in the Romanian space.

The creation of the Romanian Academy’s branch in Chisinau represents a secure step toward the spiritual reunification of the Romanian Academy, reaffirming the organic relation between Romanians on both banks of the Prut, the Call reads.

“Today, in the context of the European path of Moldova, we are called upon to strengthen once again, through institutions and concrete projects, the cultural and scientific unity of the Romanian space. In the spirit of the idea of ‘Union through deeds,’ evoked by the president of Moldova at the Munich Security Conference, this branch does not represent an isolated symbolic gesture, but a concrete institutional project aimed at effective cooperation, European compatibility and real academic integration,” the Call signed by the presidents of the two scientific bodies reads.

The initiative will relaunch academic exchanges and will stimulate the joint organization of summer schools, conferences and major projects with international participation, the presidents of the two scientific bodies said. At the same time, the branch will support the attraction of talented young people to research and will strengthen the presence of the Romanian space in global scientific bodies.

“The adoption of these legislative amendments is not an administrative act, but one of historical responsibility and a signal of confidence in the common future of Romanians in the European Union. We therefore call on to you to support and adopt, as soon as possible, the necessary amendments to the Law of the Romanian Academy, in order to enable the creation of the branch in Chisinau,” the call also reads.

This year marks two symbolic milestones for the Romanian space of science and culture: 160 years since the establishment of the Romanian Academy and 65 years since the founding of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. In 1866, among the 21 founding members of the Romanian Literary Society — which later became the Romanian Academy — there were three figures originating from Bessarabia: Alexandru Hâșdeu, Constantin Stamati and Ioan Străjescu. Through their presence, Bessarabia was part of the founding project of Romanian culture and science, a relation that remains relevant today.

The Romanian Academy’s branch in Chisinau will be the fourth structure of this kind within the Romanian scientific forum. Vice President of the Romanian Academy Mircea Dumitru told MOLDPRES that the Romanian Academy currently had branches in Iasi, Cluj and Timisoara. The draft amendment to the Law of the Romanian Academy, which provides for the creation of the branch in Chisinau, is currently in the Senate of Romania.
