Chisinau Court continues examination of bank fraud case
Chisinau Court, Buiucani branch, continued today the examination of the defense evidence in the bank fraud case, Plahotniuc episode. The court decided to hear only 27 out of the 164 witnesses proposed by the former democratic leader's lawyers.
Among the witnesses accepted by the judges are former Speaker Marian Lupu, ex-Prime Minister Iurie Leancă, former deputies Veaceslav Ioniță, Vladimir Andronachi and Sergiu Sîrbu, notary Olga Bondarciuc, as well as former governors of the National Bank of Moldova Dorin Drăguțanu and Ion Sturzu.
The lawyers of ex-PDM leader Vlad Plahotniuc proposed 164 witnesses, believing that their statements could demonstrate the innocence of the client.
The case prosecutor, Alexandru Cernei, requested the reduction of the number of witnesses, noting that at least a large part of the proposed individuals are being investigated for complicity in the billion theft.
Former politician Vladimir Plahotniuc was present once again in court, agreeing to be escorted for the continuation of the trial. He pleads not guilty.
The trial is set to continue with the hearing of the witnesses accepted by the court.
Vlad Plahotniuc was detained at the end of July in Greece and extradited to the Republic of Moldova on September 25, being immediately placed under arrest. He is charged in a case involving bank fraud, publicly known as the billion theft.
Plahotniuc faces a sentence of 15 years in prison for fraud and 10 years for money laundering.
