DOC // Commemorative coin dedicated to Queen Marie of Romania enters circulation

A new commemorative coin will enter circulation in the Republic of Moldova, following the publication today in the Official Journal of the decision by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) regarding the issuance of the coin "Queen Marie of Romania – 150 Years Since Birth," as a legal tender and for numismatic purposes.

According to the decision, the coin will be officially launched on 1 December 2025, and can be used throughout the territory of the Republic of Moldova at its nominal value. It will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and is intended for both monetary circulation and collectors, history enthusiasts, and numismatists.

The commemorative coin will be available to the public through the National Bank of Moldova as well as licensed banks in the country. The financial institutions will individually set the selling price, provided it does not exceed by more than 3% the price set by the NBM.

The document confirms that the new coin issue is recognized as legal tender, reinforcing the role of commemorative coins in promoting historical moments and notable personalities from the Romanian space.

The decision takes effect with its publication in the Official Journal of the Republic of Moldova, marking the start of the availability to the public of the coin dedicated to Queen Marie — one of the most important historical figures of Romania and early 20th century Europe.

Queen Marie of Romania (1875–1938), born Marie Alexandra Victoria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was the wife of King Ferdinand I and one of the most influential and respected personalities of modern Romania. Nicknamed "the Soldier Queen" and "Mother of the Wounded," she was noted for her direct involvement during World War I, caring for the wounded, morally supporting the army, and diplomatically representing Romania before major European powers. She was instrumental in the international recognition of the Great Union of 1918 and remains in history as a symbol of courage, dignity, and patriotism.

Queen Marie is considered one of the most remarkable female figures of the 20th century in the Romanian space. In Chisinau, a statue was erected in her honor in 2024, located in the square of Gheorghe Asachi Theoretical High School.
