Greek language and culture center in Comrat - modern space for learning and international exchange

The modern educational and cultural center dedicated to promoting the Hellenic language, history, and traditions within Comrat State University was renovated and inaugurated in late November 2025, providing students and the youth in the region with a modern space for learning, cultural activities and international exchange.

The project carried out between April and November 2025 was implemented with the support of the Greek Embassy in the Republic of Moldova and aims to develop international cooperation, promote the Greek language and culture, involve the youth in educational and cultural initiatives, and strengthen the ties between the local Gagauz community and that of the city of Orestiada, Greece.

The works targeted the classrooms, particularly room no. 311 in the university's administrative building, and included general repairs, installation of air conditioning, interactive whiteboards, blinds, and equipment necessary for conducting interactive lessons and cultural activities. The renovation has transformed the center into a modern space suitable for educational programs and cultural exchanges.

At the inauguration, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Hellenic Republic to Moldova Nikolaos Krikos highlighted the importance of the project for reinforcing cultural and educational exchanges and stated that Greece will continue to support initiatives that preserve historic heritage and promote Hellenic culture.

Rector of Comrat State University, Associate Professor Dr. Sergey Zaharia thanked the embassy for the support and emphasized that the project represents an example of successful international partnership. He highlighted that the opening of the renovated center offers new opportunities for students and strengthens academic ties between USC and educational institutions in Greece.

The administration, faculty, and students of USC expressed their gratitude to the Embassy of the Hellenic Republic for its constant support, emphasizing that the project contributes to the modernization of university infrastructure, the promotion of intercultural dialogue, and the advancement of the Hellenic language as a European language. Comrat State University expressed confidence that, in the future, international partnerships will continue to develop and bring new joint projects beneficial for the youth in the region.

The Greek Language and Culture Center was established at Comrat State University in 2006, with full financial support from the Greek government. Equipped with modern facilities and literature from Greece, the center ensures the teaching of the Greek language and culture by teachers from Greece and the Republic of Moldova.

Since the first wave of graduates in 2009, students often continue their studies in Greece and Cyprus, participate in camps and summer courses in Thessaloniki and Athens, and teach free Greek language courses in high schools and schools in Gagauzia. The center's goal is to train specialists in teaching Greek language and literature and qualified translators in Greek, Romanian, and Russian.
