Marks might return to fourth grade starting September 1, 2026; Education Ministry already testing system in more schools of Moldova
Marks might be reintroduced in the fourth grade starting from September 1, 2026, according to changes proposed to the Education Code. Pupils are to be evaluated with marks in examination subjects – Romanian language and mathematics – after ten years in which primary education exclusively used a performance descriptor system (“excellent,” “very good,” etc.).
The Education and Research Ministry (MEC) is already piloting the return to the grading system in more across the country, with the institutions involved voluntarily participating in this exercise. The measure comes in the context of a study conducted in 268 institutions last year, which showed that the abrupt transition to grades in middle school causes stress and adaptation difficulties for students. Therefore, the gradual introduction of grades aims to better prepare children for the transition to the middle school level.
After the approval of changes to the Education Code and depending on the results of the pilot, the MEC will decide whether the return to giving marks in the fourth grade will be extended to all schools of the country.
The draft under public consultation also includes other changes impacting the educational system: strengthening the schools’ network, expanding the inclusion of children with severe intellectual disabilities, support for young researchers and university environment and harmonizing the educational system with European standards.
The proposals were presented by Minister Dan Perciun on December 2, at a news press conference and discussions with representatives of the Congress of Local Authorities of Moldova (CALM) and local education authorities.
